The Body Eclectic Colloquium. March 11-13
The Body Eclectic: Exploring the Diversity of Bodily Being is a 3 day colloquium for the dissemination and exchange of ideas, research and practices that engage the topic of embodiment and phenomenological experience. Eighteen experts in a diversity of fields will come together in an extended conversation around the eclectic and collective experience of living a body in the 21st century. With an interdisciplinary approach it is our goal to promote scholarly encounters between different disciplines, professions, areas of expertise and contexts as a means of stimulating emergent and creative discussions relating to embodiment.
Our colloquium includes interdisciplinary panel discussions among experts who explore the intersection between important social and environmental topics such as: aging, care, and differently-abled bodies; the creation of inclusive, accessible spaces, a socially responsible community and environmentally responsible death; the permeability of the body through technological advances and genetic manipulation as well as ‘othering’ certain bodies through technological mainstays; and, finally, celebration of being a body in all of its differences and finding ways to enable expression of all the bodies eclectic.
Our two keynote speakers are psychoanalyst, poet, activist, and Professor Emeritus, Robert Romanyshyn, and Canadian modern dancer, choreographer, activist and head of the Margie Gillis Dance Foundation, Margie Gillis.
Among our international participants are Associate Professor Courtney Coyne-Jensen, architect, artist and urban designer at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (Copenhagen), Katrina Spade, Fellow of the Echoing Green Climate Foundation and executive director of the Urban Death Project working with Western Carolina University’s Forensic Osteology Research Station (FOReSt).
Canadian researchers include Lorna Roth on skin colour bias in film (Concordia), Amanda Boetzkes, ecological perception and neuroplasticity (UGuelph), Carolina Bergonzoni, phenomenological presence in dance (Vancouver), nurse researcher Krista Wilkins on body image and amputees (UNB), Juli Rees on expressive enabling and social justice (Vancouver), and Zoe Kreye, inclusivity and art (ECUAD). Faculty of Thompson Rivers University and key Kamloops community members will also be involved in the panel discussions.
This interdisciplinary colloquium is organized by TRU tenured professor Terryl Atkins, independent arts administrator and TRU alumna Kristina Fiedrich, and TRU Research Apprentice and undergraduate student Emily Dundas Oke. The Body Eclectic Colloquium will accompany an exhibition by Vancouver based artist Kristina Fiedrich, curated by Terryl Atkins. Under my skin, a splendor of organs opens March 11th 2016.
