WORKING IMPERFECTION2

Working Imperfection
Curated by Allie Hendrickson

Artwork has always been held to a high standard to that of perceived perfection. The idea of embracing the imperfections of an artwork is something that is not frequently discussed, and to some may even be viewed as settling for less than the artist’s best. This exhibition is exploring the need we feel as artists to create, the catharsis of our work, and embracing the final state of our work regardless of the small imperfections that it may contain.

The juxtaposition of high art and the human side of creating works that are flawed, is something those who are not experienced in of the art making practice, may not be entirely aware of, while practicing artists are very familiar with this concept. The ideal experience for visitors to have with this show would be for students to view and exhibit works that may otherwise not have been made public to exhibit. The genuine quality of the works having some form of a flaw, even if only recognizable by the artist, is important to the connection of the work and the space. As I feel there is a sense of accomplishment with art that is created by hand as it is perceivable that it may have an echo of the artist’s personality to it, the ability for one to achieve a sense of catharsis in creating the work. I believe this exhibition will be beneficial for both artists and visitors both in the multimedia display of art in its imperfect completion.
